Homework in Grade 5 focuses on the most important skills students should practice to grow as learners. We work to teach students personal responsibility in completing and turning in homework on time to prepare students for the increasing homework demands of middle school. Here's what you can expect your child to bring home:
Reading - Your child is expected to read for 30 minutes four days per week. You can choose the best days for you. You can also split the 30 minutes up over several days if your home schedule warrants this. The goal for student is two hours of reading at home per week which is tracked on the monthly Reading Calendar. (See tab.) Parents, please sign the calendar at the end of the month to verify your child's reading, and have your child return the completed calendar to school for credit on the first school day of the next month. Reading is the single most important skill for your child to practice at home. "The more you read, the better you read."
Math - Your child will generally bring a math practice sheet home Monday through Thursday. Your child should be able to complete the page with relative ease as the skill will be one we have taught and students have caught on to in class.
It is also very important that students master their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts as they are critical to your child's ability to do higher level math in middle school and beyond. Check with your child's teacher if you do not know your child's status in knowing basic facts. Five minutes of fact practice at home a day can go a long way in supporting your child's growth.
Word Study - Your child should practice spelling and/or vocabulary words 5 minutes per night at home. Our Word Study cycles do not follow a Monday through Friday progression, so check your child's Planner for test dates.
